The Rebirth of a Nation
Captain Sylas Padraig Morgan
Freebooter, drunkard, whore-monger, gambler, and bad-luck magnet. And yet, he ends up winning...
(This is the condensed condensed version, just to give everyone an idea)
Captain Morgan (first rum joker gets a swivel-gun in the face) is a very, very minor hero of Berek’s stand against the Castillian Armada, which makes him a big deal in Avalon. He’s also an embarrassing drunken wastrel, which is less of a boon, with a face like a slab of salt pork. A man of style, if not grace, he is crossing Theah and (if necessary) beyond to recapture and rediscover the 7th Sea, due to a near-death vision which he has thus far endeavored to recreate through alcohol, with no success. Though he’d like to set about organizing an expedition, things (damsels in distress, international intrigues, vast conspiracies, &c.) keep getting in the way. Sylas takes this with surprising equanimity: he’s become quite used to being Fate’s draft horse. As he would put it, “A sailor knows that you can sail when there’s wind, and you can’t when you can’t, and no amount of worrying or shouting will change that. Of course, rum can make the waiting a lot more fun.”
